| Fairfax, VA – During her commencement address in front of more than 5,000 of George Mason University’s finest, the Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, Kay Coles James, stressed the need for a commitment to public service and to give back to one’s community. "September 11 was a defining moment for our nation, and it has redefined success for your generation – igniting a new American spirit that looks beyond the material and includes giving back to both community and country," said James. "At this time of national testing, I want to call on you to take your place in the long line of men and women who, since George Mason’s time, have chosen to work for something greater than themselves by our Nation’s call to serve." She also pointed out that even though Mason was known the "reluctant statesman," preferring to tend to home and family, he understood that ‘anxiety for one’s country, in times of danger’ demanded otherwise.” And James reminded the graduates that the federal service "is going to be as competitive as any Fortune 500 company, especially because of the many varied careers one can have with Uncle Sam." James also spoke of her own personal experiences at the much-respected GMU. "Like so many in this community, I have attended graduate courses and conferences on this campus; have used the resources of the Fenwick and Johnson Center libraries; have drawn on the expertise of the School of Public Policy and the business acumen of the School of Management in my professional life," said James. "I know what a truly outstanding and important academic institution George Mason is." In closing, James noted that "this special day also belongs to the
parents and grandparents who have saved and sacrificed to provide the
opportunities afforded by one of the finest educations in the nation.
To you, the families who have loved and nurtured, shaped and supported
these young – and not so young – men and women who today begin a new phase
in their life’s journey, I applaud you with heartfelt praise."
