MEDIA ALERT

Washington, D.C. -- At the request of the Potomac Electric Power Company and Washington Gas Company, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management today announced that the federal government will delay opening its offices until 10 a.m. on Friday, January 21.

OPM continues to urge federal employees to dress in warm clothes and practice strict energy conservation measures at their duty stations, such as:

1.   Turn all hot water and heating systems down as low as possible.
2.   Turn off all electric systems except emergency systems.
3.   Staff working in buildings should dress warmly and keep power use to an absolute minimum.
4.   Because of the possibility of "rolling black-outs" staff should use stairs and avoid elevators.
