Washington, D.C. - Continuing the Bush Administration's focus on helping veterans secure jobs in the Federal civil service once their military service is completed, the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently held an all day training session at the United States Army's Fort Bliss in Texas.

The visit is part of Phase II of the Veteran Invitational Program (VIP), OPM's initiative to communicate veterans' preference rights on Federal employment opportunities to service men and women.

"The Veteran Invitational Program was created to assist veterans' transition back to civilian life," said OPM Acting Director Dan G. Blair. "Providing job search tips and assisting them as they navigate the Federal hiring process is the least we can do to show our gratitude for their dedication to defending this country."

OPM staff members held workshops and seminars for servicemen and servicewomen at the base, offering them tips, advice, and directions about how to apply for and get hired for civilian jobs in the Federal government. Key topics covered at the all day session included navigating the USAJOBS website, interviewing techniques, resume writing guidance and details on Veterans Preference and how it works.

"Four representatives from OPM conducted a Federal outreach seminar," said Randy Stovall, Transition Services Manager at the Army Career and Alumni Program at Fort Bliss. "The outreach and education seminar targeted several areas that our soldiers leaving the military need to effectively compete in the civilian workforce. OPM provided valuable information which will assist our counselors with their understanding of how to assist transitioning soldiers, as well as our soldiers who seek to create a much more effective resume. Those participating at the seminar received a clear understanding of Federal job search strategies, as well as the availability of employment opportunities within the Federal government. I strongly recommend consideration be given to continue this valuable program, and hope OPM will return to Fort Bliss within the next year to conduct another seminar."
