Washington, D.C. - U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Linda M. Springer this week issued a friendly challenge to the largest federal employee union: "Help us build a contemporary, flexible workplace that will accommodate the 21^st century career patterns of a diverse talent pool."

Speaking before more than 200 attendees at the 2006 National Treasury Employees Union Legislative Conference, Springer focused on the common interest of OPM and NTEU in building a federal workplace that reflects the realities of the labor market and the employment trends of today's workers.

"With a retirement wave approaching the federal workforce, there is a new way of thinking at OPM with an emphasis on employment flexibility," said Springer. "We are identifying and developing career patterns, looking to foster a federal work environment that meets the needs of individual employees."

Springer said the generation of employees now entering the labor market, including those joining the federal government, are not necessarily interested in a traditional career. Many newcomers, she said, may want the option of working part-time or full-time, moving in and out of government employment, or telecommuting.

"We have to have more of an open mind to bring in new employees, and we must provide the resources necessary for these employees to succeed," noted Springer. "We have to make it work for all people."

Our mission is to ensure the Federal Government has an effective civilian workforce. OPM supports U.S. agencies with personnel services and policy leadership including staffing tools, guidance on labor-management relations and programs to improve work force performance.
