Washington, D.C. -- In her last meeting as Chair of the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Kay Coles James this week spoke of the challenges she has had working on complex "people" issues in government, all the while enjoying her tenure as a team member of the Bush Administration and as the principal advisor on federal human resources policy and programs.

"What an incredible ride, leading this agency and government on a course for change, but also in working with all of you on this Council," said James. "As I look back on the role you have played in delivering on the President's Management Agenda, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge your work and your invaluable contributions."

Earlier this week, James announced her resignation as the OPM Director, effective January 31, 2005.

James has been a vocal advocate of employee safety at the workplace. Her last meeting as Chair gave her a final opportunity to implore council members on the need to stay vigilant on emergency preparedness and continuity of service issues. "The events of September 11, have forced us to think in ways in which we never thought before. And we must never become complacent about the safety of our federal employees."

This year's first CHCO Academy session is scheduled for February 17 and will focus on governmentwide HR reforms. Each session brings together council members to focus on a single topic germane to the HR community and share best practices. Seven academy sessions were held in 2004 on topics ranging from hiring flexibilities and competitive sourcing to human capital legislation and compensation reform.
