Hispanic Participation in Federal Workforce Grows

At 7.7 percent, tops 130,000; more than 3,000 higher than last year

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Office of Personnel Management Director Linda M. Springer has submitted the Seventh Annual Report to the President on Hispanic Employment in the Federal Government, which showsthe level of Hispanic participation in the Federal workforce rose to 7.7 percent as of June 30, 2007.

"Over the course of the Bush Administration, tens of thousands of Hispanics have joined our nation's civilian workforce," said Director Springer upon releasing the report during a meeting of the Interagency Task Force on Hispanic Employment in the Federal Government.

Hispanics posted gains in most agencies as well as in most categories and pay groups, from GS-5 to GS-15 and Senior Pay. Among the report's highlights, Springer noted Hispanics represented 8.6 percent of all new hires governmentwide, a 1.1 percent increase since the 2006 report. As of June 30, 2007, the total number of Hispanic employees in the Federal Government stood at 130,224.

"The retirement wave the Federal Government is facing continues to create an increasing number of excellent career opportunities for citizens interested in public service," Director Springer said. "In demographic terms, the Hispanic segment of the population is certainly a significant part of this equation."

The Annual Report to the President on Hispanic Employment in the Federal Government is required by Executive Order 13171, from October 2000, and provides statistical information as well as examples of best practices related to Hispanic participation in the Federal workforce. A copy of the report is available by contacting OPM's Hispanic Public Liaison at (202) 606-2402 or by e-mail at ken.oliver@opm.gov.
